New survey reveals the UK is becoming sick of big city living

The survey, carried out by www.explainthemarket.com, of over 1,000 people shows that folk in Gloucestershire seem to be suffering less than most.

More and more people than ever before are considering moving away from big cities like London in favour of smaller cities and towns like Gloucester, Cirencester and Cheltenham.

Young professionals are most desperate to come to counties like Gloucestershire and perhaps surprisingly almost 40% have been considering a move away from our biggest cities during 2016.

The survey was commissioned by national accountants Crowe Clark Whitehill and Rock the Cotswolds, ahead of ‘Property Rocks the Cotswolds’ on November 9th at the former HMP Gloucester Prison where experts (architects, builders, designers, community representatives) are meeting to discuss how to design better working and living environments across the country. This event will mark the start of a campaign for more government support for smaller towns across the UK.

LONG COMMUTES ARE MAKING BRITS ILL

There is clear evidence that long commutes into big cities are impacting people’s mental and physical health. 60% of twentysomethings and almost half of us aged between 35 and 55 report that long commutes are harming our health.

70% OF US SUFFER WITH SUNDAY NIGHT WORK WORRY – BUT GLOUCESTERSHIRE WORKERS SUFFER LESS

But this number in Gloucestershire is amongst the lowest in the UK compared with other areas

YOUNGER PEOPLE IN BIGGER CITIES ARE EMBARASSED BY THEIR HOMES AND CANNOT SEE WHEN THEY WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO MOVE

Over 20% of people in 20s and 30s living in our biggest cities feel they may never be able to afford to own their own home.

In big cities like London – Almost a quarter of people under 40 wouldn’t want a new partner to see where they really live! And over half of all people worry about physical safety and crime. However, very few young people inGloucestershire share the same worries.

HOW DOES OUR WORKING ENVIRONMENT IMPACT ON OUR HAPPINESS?

The survey revealed that younger workers and workers in bigger cities smile the least during the working day! Older workers and those with jobs based in towns like Cirencester and Cheltenham report smiling more than 5 times during a typical day at work!
